An air crash took 19 of Chapecoense's 22 players and three members of its coaching staff, including coach Cayo Junol. With one step away from the South American Cup title, the club were nearly all wiped out. Chapecoense, founded in 1973, had long played in the lower leagues. Four years after it was founded in 1977, it won the Santa Catalina State Championship. From obscurity to the top of the Brazilian league, with a chance of emerging champions of the South American Cup, that crash shattered the team's and the city's biggest dream.
